Glen Edmunds had the privilege of being asked to be the Local Rally Expert and Local Team Coordinator for the Toyota Gazoo Racing Team in 2021 when the famous Safari Rally of the WRC calendar returned to Kenya for the first time in 19 years.
Sebastian Ogier and Julien Ingrassia won this amazing event! Very few people win the Safari Rally on their first attempt. Tommi Mäkinen also won on his first Safari. Both times Glen was the local rally expert, making a major contribution to their success. -
Ken Block And Glen Edmunds
All around motor sportsman, rally driver and famous for his drifting gymkhanas which became famous world wide. Ken is a Youtube phenomenon. His videos have been watched 178 million times and counting!
In February, 2021, Ken entered the East African Safari Classic Rally in a Porsche 911SC. This was his first time entering the event. During the 9 day rally, that covered over 5,000km, he and Glen Edmunds got to know each other and shared their experiences and passion for motorsport. -
Micky Biasion, Glen Edmunds and Tiziano Siviero
Glen was thrilled to meet up with these old friends during the Safari Rally in Kenya in June, 2021.
Glen worked on the Lancia Team for Italian rally legends Micky Biasion and his co-driver Tiziano Siviero during the Safari Rally rounds of the WRC Championship in the 1980’s.
Micky and T were two times World Rally Champions. They also won the Safari Rally in 1988 with a Lancia Delta Integrale. -
Jari Matti Latvala
Jari-Matti Latvala and Glen Edmunds forged an exceptional professional partnership that became instrumental in Toyota Gazoo Racing's remarkable Safari Rally dominance. Since 2021, Latvala has commanded Toyota's global WRC campaign as Team Principal of TGR WRT, while Edmunds has served as Toyota's invaluable Local Rally Expert and Team Coordinator, specializing in the challenging Safari Rally terrain. Their collaboration represents a perfect blend of global motorsport strategy and intimate local knowledge—Latvala orchestrating the team's overall direction while Edmunds provides crucial real-time insights into Kenya's demanding landscape.
The synergy between Latvala's world-class leadership and Edmunds's unparalleled understanding of African rally conditions has been the cornerstone of Toyota's sustained success. This dynamic partnership proved its worth spectacularly when Toyota achieved an unprecedented clean sweep at the 2022 Safari Rally, securing positions 1, 2, 3, and 4. Derek Dauncey and Glen Edmunds
Derek Dauncey and Glen Edmunds first met during Tommi Mäkinen’s 1996 Safari Rally victory, forming a close professional partnership—Dauncey as part of Mitsubishi Ralliart and later team manager, and Glen as the trusted local rally expert and coordinator. Working side by side through the late 1990s and early 2000s, their strong working relationship and mutual respect helped Mitsubishi achieve major success at Safari Rally events, with Dauncey overseeing team operations and Glen providing essential on-the-ground support. After Dauncey left Mitsubishi in 2004, he went on to manage Ken Block and later supported his daughter, Lia Block, in her pursuit of a career in F1.

Richard Burns and Glen Edmunds
Richard Burns credited Glen Edmund’s local rally experience and expertise for helping him win the his first Safai Rally round of the World Rally Championship in 1998. Glen was “Richard’s eyes” in the chase helicoper and having rallied the routes many times himself could offer practical adivce. Richard went on to win the safari again in 2000 as well as the entire World Rally Championship in 2001. He was also instrumental in Mitsubishi winning the world manufactuerer’s title in 1998 as well as for Peugeout in 2002.

Lassi Lampi and Glen Edmunds
Lassi Lampi and Glen Edmunds formed an exceptionally effective aerial coordination duo during Mitsubishi Ralliart’s Safari Rally campaigns—most notably during Tommi Mäkinen’s breakthrough win in 1996 and subsequent events. Glen operated from the "chase helicopter," providing real-time guidance for the second factory driver. He relayed crucial information about terrain changes, roaming wildlife, other vehicles, and safety considerations along the route.
Meanwhile, Lassi Lampi flew in the lead helicopter, using his engineering expertise and keen eye for talent to extend the team’s aerial advantage. As a six-time European rally champion and experienced WRC car developer, Lampi offered invaluable technical insight into vehicle dynamics and race strategy. Glen, with his extensive experience driving and winning on these stages, had an intimate understanding of what it took to succeed in the challenging Safari conditions—delivering detailed, practical feedback on road conditions and strategy from his unique vantage point.
Together, their layered approach delivered a powerful combination: Glen’s expert, terrain-focused navigation complemented by Lassi’s technical refinement and strategic outlook. This two-tiered system gave Tommi Mäkinen and the Mitsubishi team a significant edge, optimizing visibility, minimizing surprises, and playing a key role in conquering the demanding Kenyan stages. Lampi’s aerial perspective added a crucial layer of precision, reinforcing Glen’s expert guidance and elevating the team’s overall performance at the Safari Rally.

Andrew Cowan and Glen Edmunds
Scottish rally legend and founder of Mitsubish Ralliart Europe. Andrew was most famous for being England’s greatest long distance rally driver. Most famous for his wins in the London to Sydney Marathons in 1968 and 1977. He was also 5 time winner of Australia’s Southern Cross Rallies and the world’s longest rally, the 32,000km South American Marathon in 1978.
He was in the top four positions in the Safari rally on four different events. Also finished 2nd in the famous Paris-Dakar Rally in 1985.
Andrew hired Glen as the team’s local coordinator and local expert during the Safari Rally years of the WRC in Kenya (1996 - 2002). Andrew and the team relied heavily on Glen’s African experience. During his time with Mitsubishi Ralli Art Europe, Glen was in the chase helicopter to give advice to Tommi Mäkinen, Richard Burns, Freddy Loix and Alister McCrae during the Safari Rally events. Andrew also asked Glen to assist the team on several other WRC events such as: Rally Australia, Rally Argentina, Rally Indonesia and Rally Hong Kong-Bejing. They remained close friends until his death in 2019. -
Tommi Mäkinen And Glen Edmunds
Tommi is one of the most successful Word Rally Champion (WRC) drivers of all time with 4 time world rally champion as one of his many accolades.
In 2018, Tommi became the first person in the history to win a Championship as both a driver and as a team principal (Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT).
Glen and Tommi first worked together during the 1996 Safari Rally when Tommi won the event with Mitsubishi Ralli Art Europe. The relationship continuted for the next 6 years as Glen continued to work with the team in each WRC Safari Rally Event. -
Björn Waldegård and Glen Edmunds
Famous Rally Driver with a 40 year career, during which time he won the famous afari Rally four separate times. They met and started working together when Björn first came to compete in the Safari Rally in 1975. They worked together over the years when Björn drove for Ford, Lancia, Porsche, and Mercedes. He and Glen have remained friends.

Phil Short and Glen Edmunds
Phil Short and Glen Edmunds were key collaborators during the Mitsubishi Ralliart era, particularly during their campaigns in the Safari Rally. Phil Short served as a former world-class co-driver and Team Manager at Mitsubishi Ralliart, while Glen Edmunds contributed as the team's local consultant on stages and local routes and airborne consultant during the Safari Rally events in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Edmunds was typically positioned in the "chase helicopter" over the Kenyan stages, effectively acting as the team’s “eyes in the sky.” He used his deep knowledge of the terrain to advise drivers—including those under Phil Short’s management—on challenging sections, timing, and strategy). Other drivers that Glen assisted with helicopter duties include after Tommi Makkinnen, Richard Burns, Freddy Loix, Alistair McRae, Francois Delacour.
This partnership was professional and complementary: Phil Short managed the team’s rally operations, while Glen Edmunds offered real-time, tactical guidance during the Safari stages. Their combined expertise boosted Mitsubishi’s performance in one of the world’s toughest rally events.

Alister McCRae and Glen Edmunds
World Rally Championship driver with numerous wins including the British Rally Championship. He is the brother of the late Collin McCrae winner of the World Rally Championship (1995). Glen was the Air born driving consultant and spotter in the chase helicopter for both Alistair McCrae and François Delecour during their stint with Mitsubishi RalliArt Europe during the Sarari Rally in 2002.

Junior Preston and Glen Edmunds
Kenya rally legend who was a factory drivers for international teams such as Ford, Lancia, Audi, Porsche and Nissan and dominated the local rally scene between the years 1975 and 1990.
Glen and “Junior” grew up together as brothers. Glen was one of Junior’s rally mechanics during the years 1977 - 1991 when Junior competed in the WRC rounds of the Safari Rally. During Junior’s stint at Nissan, Glen was given the position of “chase car driver.”
When Junior retired from the rally circuit he became one of the advanced driving instructors at Glen Edmunds Advanced Driving. -
Kenjiro Shinozuka, Tetsuo Shoji and Glen Edmunds
Kenjiru won the Rallye Cote d’Ivoire Bandama
in 1991 and 1992, making him the first Japanese driver to win a WRC event. He also placed second overall in the famous Safari Rally in both 1994 and 1995. Kenjiro was also a fierce competitor in the Paris-Dakar Rally and was the first Japanese driver to win the famous Paris-Dakar Rally (1997). Tetsuo Shoji, Kenjiro’s mechanic was a legendary Japanese mechanic that was part of Kenjiro’s successes.
Glen was hired as the local rally expert during their years competing in the Safari Rally in Kenya. -
Rob Wilson
Rob Wilson, a renowned precision driver coach who has trained Formula 1 legends like Kimi Räikkönen, Valtteri Bottas, Lance Stroll, and David Coulthard, joined forces with Glen Edmunds to develop advanced training techniques for armoured vehicles. Their partnership merges Rob’s expertise in vehicle dynamics and smooth control with Glen’s first-hand experience navigating high-risk African environments, where armoured vehicles face extreme conditions.
Together, they refined methods to overcome the unique challenges of armoured vehicles—such as increased weight, higher centre of gravity, limited braking, and altered suspension. Rob’s techniques, focused on predictability and subtle control, help drivers maintain stability and safety under pressure. Glen adapted these into scenario-based courses, making them practical for Africa’s tough terrain and security threats.
Glen Edmunds has also met and worked for several highly celebrated people during his career.

Ewan McGreggor, Glen Edmunds and Charlie Boreman. Ewan is a Golden Globe Winning actor most famous for his role in several Star Wars movies as Obi Wan Kenobi. Glen was chosen as Ewan and Charlie’s personal security driver when they passed through Nairobi on their epic trans continent motorcycle trip from England to South Africa as they made the popular series T.V. series, “The Long Way Down.”
