Learn to drive in Kenya

Before You Start

Before you can start your driving lessons you need to have a Provisional Driving License. Therefore, if you do not have one you will need to apply for one from the  Kenya Revenue Authority located in Times Tower, on Haile Selassie Avenue, Nairobi. You will need to take an I.D. that shows your birth date or a valid passport. The cost is ksh 600/-. Alternatively you can go to the Automobile Association of Kenya and pay 600/- plus a 580/- service charge (price reduced for AA members).

After you pass the Glen Edmunds Learner Driving Course, (and you are a minimum of 18 years of age), you will be qualified to go and take your test from the Kenya Police Driving License Sections located at Jogoo Road, Karen or Ruaka Police Station

  • You can go even further with our advanced courses.

If you wonder why it’s important to invest in our learner driver training that exceeds European standards, consider the following statistics:

Kenya Statistics
•    East Africa is considered to be one of the most dangerous driving environments in the world.
•    Kenya ranked the 5th highest number of accidents per licensed vehicles out of 29 selected countries worldwide - From research carried out by the UK Transport Research Laboratory (TRRL) in 1986.
•    Kenya has an average of 35 road crashes a day
•    Over 3,000 people are killed on Kenyan roads annually
•    That equals 8 deaths a day
•    Which means one person dies every 3 hours from road accident related injuries.

The above statistics reflect the fact that many drivers are not receiving a comprehensive driver education and are often lacking in a firm foundation in the fundamentals of driving. Low driver competence levels combined with the increasing number of vehicles on the road plus bad road conditions makes driving in Kenya and other parts of Africa very hazardous.

By offering professionally operated learner driving courses Glen Edmunds Performance Driving School is making a large contribution to reducing the increasing number of road fatalities and developing safer and more responsible drivers.

Teen driving:  the chilling reality

If you are the parent of a teenage driver, chances are you are extremely concerned about the welfare of your child every time they get behind the wheel. The following statistics from America justify your concerns:

•    Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of teen fatalities.  About 44% of all
teen deaths in 2003 were attributed to vehicle crashes (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
• Teen drivers are often at the wheel when these tragedies occur.  In 2002, for example, 61% of teenage passenger deaths happened when another teen was driving (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
• Teenagers far exceed all other age groups in terms of per capita deaths relating to vehicle crashes, both as drivers and passengers (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety).
• One out of every five licensed 16-year-old drivers will be in a vehicle crash (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
• The first year of unsupervised driving is the most dangerous.  In fact, the crash risk drops by more than two-thirds after a driver completes his or her first 1,500 miles of independent driving (McCartt, Shabanova & Leaf, 2001).
• For 16 and 17-year-olds, carrying just one passenger increases the crash risk by about 50% (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
• More than one-third of teen driver fatalities involve speeding (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
