Introduction to the Dakar Rally, January 2008

From its inception in 1979, the Dakar Rally has grown to be one of the largest, most popular sporting events in the world. The rally garners international media coverage, attracts millions of television viewers, hundreds of thousands of spectators, and hundreds of world-class competitors from 50 different countries.

Every January, the Dakar Rally competitors test themselves against the 16-day, 6,000k course from Europe, through the mountains, rocks and Sahara desert of Africa, to Dakar, Senegal. The course is unmarked, and racers must use their heads as well as their guts to Navigate, using a compass and road book.

The Dakar Rally is an epic adventure story as well as a race. 2008 marks the historic 30th running of the "Dakar".

Renowned as the toughest motor sports event in the world, usually, less than half of the entrants finish. All, however, have some level of the "Spirit of the Dakar," an almost mythical combination of camaraderie and competitiveness that characterizes this event and makes its stories so compelling.

The Dakar is a famous, highly televised and published event throughout the world. Eurosport televises the events worldwide, while SuperSport, and TV Africa bring it to the African continent. In Kenya, it is televised via the Nation and  KTN. It is also comprehensively covered in all the international daily newspapers and motor sport magazines.
